A small study compared berberine, myo-inositol, and metformin in women with PCOS. After 3 months, all three women had improved measures of blood sugar and insulin, body composition, reproductive hormones, and cholesterol and triglycerides, to different degrees. But the study was small, short-term, and limited to women with PCOS.

So there’s no clear winner in the berberine versus inositol debate. Neither supplement is a replacement for medical treatment, but your health goals might point you to one over the other. 

Berberine may be a better fit if you:

  • want to lower LDL cholesterol or triglycerides
